3 game

Playname : 3 game - trips

1

This option is called TRIPS because we are setting the play for the 3 man. In TRIPS we will use ball deception and player movement to disguise our real intentions and allow a good opportunity for a good shot, or even a look for a 3 point shot from favorable or high percentage areas on the floor.

Note in the setup that the 4 is on the left side of the floor. This will allow the players to move to the right off of the initial movement.

The play motion will now be shown in the following panels.

2

1 begins by dribble exchange to the right side wing. As 1 dribbles hard toward the wing, the wing man, in this case 3 simply slides down toward the baseline.

Coaches Note: This move is highly effective if you have run the down option as defenders tend to play a bit more honest. When they do, we can use TRIPS to full advantage.

As 1 drives to the wing on the right, the offside wing (2) dives down below 4 on the low block.

3

As 1 dribbles toward the wing and as 2 is diving to the low block, 5 steps out in position to recieve a return pass from 1.

2 upon going low, now uses 4 and performs a circle pick coming back up the the wing from where he started.

1 passes over the top to 5.

4

Here we show 1 reversing the pass to 5. 2 is now returning to the wing position off of the circle pick.

After 1 passes to 5, he then goes to set a down screen on 3's defender.

Coaches Note: 5 and 2 should learn later to read this backside option. If 2's defender is following 2 could curl right back inside toward the lane off of the circle pick and be open in the lane for an easy dump pass and score. If a switch is called by the defense then 2 should run hard out to the wing as shown for he will have the advantage on any switches.

5

As soon as 5 has the ball they continue to reverse the ball to 2 who has now popped out to the wing.

3 uses the down screen and rubs off of 1.

After 5 has passed to 2 on the wing, he then sets off to set a staggered screen for 3 who is working his way back up toward the top of the key.

Coaches note: Later 3 should be taught to read his defender. If he "dogs" him (like a dog following his master) 3 should curl inside to the lane immediately as 1 will pick 3's defender on any "dog." If 3's defender jumps inside and works up the line inside of 1's pick, then 3 should continue up the line and 5 will pick off any defender who is inside working their way up. 5 should be taught to "head hunt." This means to look for a person to pick, not an area to set a pick

6

3 now has the option of reading what is easiest for him. If he wants to curl and get a shot off at the top of the key he has it available. If he wants to "fade & step" for the 3 point shot he has this option too.

2 passes to the open option established by 3.

Coaches Note: 1 & 5 after setting their screens or picks should move toward the lane to establish prime rebounding position if 3 pops for a 3 point attempt.

7

REBOUND & RESET

Here we show how 5 and 1 can obtain inside rebounding position. Also you can see how we can reset back into "3 Game" and continue the motion of the basic motion if a bad pass or a great defender prevents 3 from getting his shot off.

In the case of reset, 5 would merely step to the free throw line, and 1 would come back up to the right side wing extended.

8

Out of the RESET we can slip right back into Basic Motion. Since 4 is still on the leftside of the floor, and since 1 would be coming up to meet the pass, 3 should pass to the right, and use 5's up screen and we are right back into the offense.
